Vera-Ellen has fallen into some undeserved obscurity today, but around 1950 she ranked right up there in the line of great movie dancers alongside Ann Miller and Gwen Verdon. "The Belle of New York", in which she starred opposite Fred Astaire (as a hopelessly klutzy, if well-bred, socialite who falls in love with her missionary character) is one of her best films. In this sequence, Vera-Ellen does an elegant and very sexy dance number in corset and black opera gloves while preparing for an evening out on the town.
